Laboratory
|
Students will engage in short-term field and laboratory studies of their own design, guided by faculty instructors. Student teams are involved with project design, sample preparation, sample measurement, data interpretation, and presentation of these mini-project results. Each student team of nine students works with three instructors and one laboratory technician, providing the low student-to-instructor ratio beneficial for creating a strong learning environment.
Along the way, students are introduced to the principles of IRMS operations, of key laboratory preparation techniques, and on the use of peripherals coupled to the IRMS. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to collect, prepare, analyze, and interpret stable isotope results of samples ranging from compound-specific to whole organism and ecosystem scales. |
